Alison Flakes.

Alison Flakes, a popular adjunct faculty member in the School of Social Work, died June 5. She was 64.

A native of Buffalo, Flakes earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Buffalo State College and a master’s degree from the UB School of Social Work in 1996.

She served as director of recruitment, admissions and student affairs at the School of Social Work from 1998-2000, resigning to pursue a doctorate from the University at Albany’s School of Social Welfare. She took a leave from the doctoral program to work in a residential drug treatment program for women in Sandy Springs, Georgia.

Flakes also was an adjunct faculty member in the UB School of Social Work in 1998, and again from 2007-14. Her professional interests and experience included working with children and families in the areas of mental health and developmental disabilities, and program/organizational development. She also worked with women with AOD (alcohol and other drug), mental health and trauma issues.

She taught numerous courses at UB, including Administration and Management, Theories of Organizational Behavior and Development, Health and Disability, and Diversity and Oppression.
