An article on School Construction News reports on construction of the new Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences building and notes that the grand opening is scheduled for December, with students slated to begin using the building in January. The article quotes Michael E. Cain, vice president for health sciences and dean of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, who said the primary reason for moving downtown was to expand, modernize and improve patient care, recruit new faculty and strengthen Buffalo’s academic health center on the medical campus. “Expansion of medical schools is a national and regional necessity today,” he said. “Physician shortages in Western New York range from moderate to severe in some specialties — including primary care.” The article also quotes Laura Hubbard, vice president for finance and administration, who said, “We designed the new medical school building with an eye toward contributing to economic development in the neighborhood. We want medical students, faculty and staff to be out in the community, patronizing local businesses.”
