This course uses a ?strengths-based? (non-deficit) perspective to explore themes, issues, and theoretical approaches to the education of African-American students. In focus are: Social Science perspectives (Sociology, Anthropology, History); African-American epistemologies; African-American educational leadership literature; and the achievement gap and disproportionality in relation to special education classification and suspension rates. Critical Race Theory will be one of the frames of our learning. Throughout the semester, the learning objective is acknowledgment and knowledge of effective educational practices.
