  Course Description
This course provides an overview of the various counseling fields available for individuals interested in pursuing helping careers. Professionals working in these diverse fields, including but not limited to mental health counseling, counseling or school psychology, rehabilitation counseling, school counseling and social work, work in a variety of settings such as schools, hospitals, community mental health centers, substance abuse treatment facilities, and hospitals. We will explore the values and characteristics of counselors and what core competencies are essential to becoming an effective professional counselor across diverse settings. While many of these are unique, there are core aspects, values, and issues across the various counseling specializations. The course explores the pressing professional issues and challenges currently facing counselors across these specializations and their impact on those who work in the field.
