This course explores theoretical and empirical approaches to the field of second language acquisition with a focus on the acquisition of Romance languages, or in some cases, the acquisition of other languages by first language speakers of Romance languages. We will consider competing theoretical frameworks informed by Generative Grammar, Cognitive Linguistics, and Connectionism, and the methods used in applied, experimental, and psycho- and neurolinguistic research. We will consult peer reviewed foundational and state-of-the-art investigations that elicit data from a wide range of populations, including adult second language learners, childhood bilinguals, and third language learners or multilinguals. Over the course of the semester, undergraduates and graduates enrolled in the `extensiveż tract will develop a pilot study proposal (the latter will involve a more in-depth review of the previous literature) and graduates enrolled in the `intensiveż tract will collect a small amount of pilot data for their study.
