This special topics seminar looks at the relationship of art to politics in several historical moments throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, with a deliberate focus on global sites. We will engage with dance, theater (including musical theater), and performance art that responds to particular kinds of political conflict, both military conflict and culture wars, with an eye to how artistic movements develop alongside political ones. Possible sites of investigation include: the NEA Four and the Culture Wars, Weimar Germany, Argentina?s ?Dirty War,? the Vietnam War, conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the ongoing Syrian civil war. Students will be asked to consider their own approach to making art in light of political conflicts, and we will attend to artistic practices in our contemporary moment in the U.S. (Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter, the Women?s March on Washington) as generators and reflections of political culture. This is a discussion-based course and students are expected to bring their own areas of interest and expertise into the classroom.
