This course examines the life and work of Ludwig van Beethoven focusing on the music of his late period and the compositional evolution that led up to some of his most seminal works. We will also look at a more contemporary analogue found in the late recordings of the great jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. Like Beethoven, Coltrane?s music also went through a rapid evolution from bebop to free improvisation. Recently released bootleg recordings and expanded reissues of the John Coltrane Quartet have allowed for additional understanding and insight into this music. No prior knowledge is required other than an enthusiasm for classical and jazz and a willingness to immerse oneself in the music. The course emphasizes critical listening, reading and writing.
  Course Description
