Open to Architecture majors and Architecture minors. ARC 404/ARC 593: AURAL ARCHITECTURE Credit Hours: 3 Credits Class Hours: Friday 8:10 AM to 10:50 AM Instructor: Paul L. Battaglia, AIA Eligibility: Graduate and Undergraduate Students, Architecture Minors and Majors COURSE DESCRIPTION: Aural Architecture refers to the properties of a space that can be experienced by listening. An aural architect is someone who selects specific aural attributes of a space based on what is desirable. Spaces can induce such feelings as contemplative tranquility, heightened sensitivity, a harmonious and mystical connection to the cosmos, or exhilaration. Acoustical conditions that support social activity and comfort can be created if one has an understanding of the psychological effects of scale and dimension, material characteristics, and the continuity and geometry of spatial enclosure that create acoustical conditions. We will focus on pursuing a study of emotional and subjective reactions to sounds and their associative and acoustic natures. There is a good deal of literature on the subject in the literatures of Music and perceptual psychology which we will consult through recent studies, articles and books. We will attempt to prepare a compendium of sounds that create identifiable emotional reactions and relate what we learn to dimensions and materials of spaces.
