This course examines behavioral disorders, mental illness in Western terms, from a broad cross-cultural perspective, using insights from anthropology, sociology, psychology, and psychiatry. The course surveys the interesting range of behavioral disorders in other cultures, and asks whether they are unique, or are variations on disorders found in all cultures. The course also invites us to consider the distinctive, culturally-shaped features of behavioral disorders in U.S. society.
