Course description: ARTS ONE is a new course offered as part of the University's Creative Arts Initiative. The program is designed to expose students to Buffalo's rich arts scene through direct participation. Once a week, the class will meet to attend a select example of Buffalo's diversity of arts events - including concerts, gallery shows, installations, poetry readings, theatrical performances, and dance. Following each event, the teacher will lead reflections on the students? experiences and broach philosophical discussions elicited by their encounters. Students will also be given opportunities to interact directly with members of Buffalo's cultural community. Orientation for the class will be on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 3:00 pm in Baird Hall Room 211. Tclass will only meet in the classroom on a few select Thursdays for additional discussions. The schedule of events will be given during orientation, with some flexibility required for potential changes. Requirements will include some supplementary reading and listening, as well as the keeping of a course journal, and a final presentation on the students' topics of choice. Only one excused absence is permitted. Class size is limited to 40 students. Tickets will be provided and so will transportation, if necessary.
  Course Description
ARTS ONE is an experiential course offered as part of the University's Creative Arts Initiative, a new program designed to bring creators and performers in the arts to campus to present their work and engage in conversations with students, faculty, and members of the community. Class size is limited to 16. Every week students will be exposed to what is going on in the arts in Buffalo: exhibits at the galleries, musical performances in various venues, literary events. Most weeks, someone connected with an event, a curator at one of the galleries or a writer or musical performer or composer, will meet with the class and have a conversation and answer questions. There will be no exam, but students will be expected to maintain a detailed notebook/diary about the various events. The goal is for participants to engage a wide variety of artistic events and have conversations with some of the people who make them happen. Tickets will be provided and so will transportation, as necessary.
