Orpheus: The Meaning of Music." The Orpheus myth is ancient and predates the emergence of Western modernity by thousands of years. Yet at the beginning of the seventeenth century this myth was taken up in order to facilitate the birth of opera and has remained a touch stone, both of Western classical music and other traditions ever since. In this class, we will be considering what this myth tells us about what music is and how we have conceived its meaning. We will start with some of the ancient sources of Orpheus as a religious cult, pass through some of the classical occurrences (in Ovid, Plato, and Boethius), consider some of the key versions of the myth in Western musical culture (such as in Monteverdi, Gluck, Beethoven, Offenbach), and then in film (Cocteau's famous 1950 film, the 1959 Portuguese film "Black Orpheus," set in Rio de Janeiro, and the devastating remake of that by Carlos Diegues, with music by the great Caetano Veloso).
