For Music Majors and Minors only. This course is an introduction to free composition within the context of contemporary art music. Students will develop skills by working on compositional etudes of increasing scope and by receiving critical feedback from the instructor in in-class discussions and private lessons. For a final project, students will have the opportunity to write a piece for the professional new music ensemble Wooden Cities, who will play the piece in a recorded public reading session at the end of the term. The course will also survey contemporary art music repertoire, and will discuss related issues such as instrumentation, notation, and the compositional process. No previous composition experience required.
