  Course Description
This course will cover contemporary and historical issues as they relate to the institutions of American education, including the nature and purpose of schooling; the relationship between race, class, and gender and educational achievement; multicultural issues in education; school reform; and the rights and responsibilities of teachers and students. The course will provide a clear, concise introduction to the historical, political, social, and legal foundations of education and to the profession of teaching in the United States. Students will come away with a strong knowledge of the sociological forces behind the shaping of the American educational system through connecting with the latest topics, issues, and data.
