This course is designed to introduce graduate students to critical theory, research methodology, and professional practices in Romance studies. An overview of critical theory will permit students to explore the different methods to analyze literary texts. Students will also examine current issues in the fields of literary and cultural studies, questions of professional ethos and approaches to teaching in the discipline. Finally students will become initiated to the bibliographical and research tools that form the basis of sound scholarship. Students will complete assignments of varying lengths that are designed to simulate common professional activities in the field. The objective of these exercises is to encourage reflection in scholarly practice and to provide students with the tools for success.
