Our Story

After some years of preliminary work, the Center for Excellence in Writing was funded as a 3 E proposal in 2012. During the 2013-2014 academic year, the Implementation and Assessment Committee, which represented the whole university, developed a mission statement and approved a model for action. The CEW opened its doors on September 16, 2013.

The mission statement is clear about the breadth of our project:

UB’s Center for Excellence in Writing supports writers across the university as they compose, construct, and share meaning. Since learning to write is a life-long endeavor, all members of the UB community are also students of their own writing processes. Committed to the idea that writing both creates and communicates knowledge, understanding, and individual reflection, the CEW provides attentive, respectful readers, offers workshops on writing and writing instruction, and conducts research to guide the future development of writing practices.

From this mission statement, the Committee proposed a model of a center which provides one on one consultations, writing groups, and workshops; guides the assessment of writing services; coordinates writing programs; supports academic writing at UB, including writing in the disciplines; advances discipline specific knowledge about writing; and reaches out to the Buffalo community as well as UB’s global programs and international partners.

In our first years of operation we have hosted thousands of consultations with writers across campus, hired and educated consultants from a variety of disciplines, hosted dissertation retreats, writing groups, workshops for faculty and students, and consulted with faculty to support their integration of writing across the disiplines.  We look forward to continued growth as we support the communication literacy objectives of UB writers and disciplines.
