Social and political philosophy investigates individual and cultural identities, communities, justice, social values, unity and diversity, and the best way to organize just societies.

Jorge Gracia has developed courses in racial and ethnic identity, and Carolyn Korsmeyer writes on feminist theory, especially as it pertains to cultural production. Kenneth Shockley extends his work in ethics to theories of collective responsibility and collective agency.

The Philosophy Department offers a joint JD-PhD program with the Law School.
