This central area of philosophy investigates the kinds of entities that constitute basic components of reality. Subfields include Philosophy of Mind and Ontology.

Faculty members who have written extensively on both historical scholarship and contemporary problems in metaphysics include Kah-Kyung Cho, Randall Dipert, Maureen Donnelly, Jorge Gracia, David Hershenov, Barry Smith, and Neil Williams.


This branch of metaphysics studies the nature of the mental and its relation to physical reality; rationality and emotions; and moral psychology.
Within the field of metaphysics, UB hosts specialized studies in formal and applied ontology, led by Barry Smith.
