Epistemology concerns theories of knowledge, including examination of perception and reasoning. Epistemology bridges metaphysics–insofar as it posits theories of how reality comes to be known, and philosophy of mind, inasmuch as knowledge engages mental faculties.

Experimental Philosophy (X-Phi) is also a focus of interest for members of the Department, especially James Beebe. Several members of the Department of Philosophy, including John Kearns, work with colleagues in other fields in the emerging area of Cognitive Science.

The University has strong departments of Linguistics and Computer Science and is a center for research in cognitive linguistics and semantic network theory. Courses in these departments complement the Department of Philosophy courses on language, ontology, artificial intelligence and phenomenology.
