If you enrolled at UB before Summer 2016, please consult the information below to figure out what courses you will need to take to complete your writing requirement.

UB will no longer be offering sections of ENG 101 and ENG 201 to fulfill the writing and humanities requirements. Use the information below to find what class you can take instead.

How do I figure out what I am required to take?

To figure out what courses you are required to take in order to fulfill your writing requirement, you can always ask your academic advisor  or check your Academic Advisement Report.

You should also check your standardized test scores (SAT, ACT, AP, TOEFL, and IELTS) to see if you have should place out of the required writing courses.

What if I have not completed the ENG 101 requirement?

After summer 2017, to satisfy your ENG 101 requirement, you will need to take ENG 105. This course is offered every fall, spring, and summer and will satisfy the CL1 requirement.

Click here for information about ENG 105.

What if I have not completed the ENG 201 requirement?

After summer 2017, to satisfy your ENG 201 requirement you will need to take a Communication Literacy 2 (CL2). CL2 is taught within the disciplines, providing you with a range of choices for competing your ENG 201 requirement. However, as you were under the old Gen Ed sequence and the old 101-201 combination also satisfied the Humanities requirement, you will need to do one of two things:

  1. Take a Humanities CL2 course, or
  2. Take a non-Humanities CL2 course and an additional Humanities course

You can see a list of approved CL2 courses in the Undergraduate Course Catalog here: http://catalog.buffalo.edu/policies/degree/ubcurriculum.html#/clII

Click here for more information about CL2 courses.

How do I know if my CL2 course satisfies my humanities requirement?

CL2 courses will only satisfy your humanities requirement if a program in the humanities offers it. CL2 courses in the following departments will satisfy the humanities requirements: AAS, AS, AMS, CL, COL, ENG (excluding ENG 105), FR, GER, GGS, HIS, HMN, ITA, JDS, LLS, PHI, RSP, SPA, TNS, and other languages.

If you take a CL2 course offered by a department other than the ones listed above, you will need to take another course in one of these departments to satisfy your humanities requirement.
