“The thinking, the analyzing, and the writing are the basis of this program and prepared me for what I am doing now. ”

Alumnus, UB Communication PhD Program

For UB Alumnus Yuchao Huang, his years at UB were an enjoyable time to bond with a diverse set of mentors, colleagues and peers.

“I feel all faculty here were mentors for me. In each seminar, lunch gathering, or kickball match, everyone was close to each other. Faculty shared their knowledge, their experience, and their food. We students shared our feelings, our secrets, and food too! Especially as an international student, the diversity and the bonding helped me earn my degree.”

Huang is now an Assistant Professor in the Department of Indigenous Languages and Communication at National Dong Hwa University in Taiwan.

From the first moment he arrived, Huang noticed a special closeness between professors and students.

“We are family! People here are not only passionate about their careers or research interests but also eager to interact with others, which is when real communication happens!”

Academics were important at Buffalo, Huang asserts, but for him the social aspects were also memorable.

“The thinking, the analyzing, and the writing are the basis of this program and prepared me for what I am doing now. However, what I learned the most is how people love what they are doing; this encourages me to try hard but still enjoy myself. UB has friendly people, a lovely campus, and wonderful communication.”
