The Airway Microbiome and Lung Cancer in a COPD Cohort (Manoj Mammen, MD, MS): Our hypothesis is the increased risk of lung cancer in those individuals with COPD is partially due to interaction of the airways microbiome and the innate immunity. We are testing this hypothesis utilizing sputum samples obtained and stored from a VA funded COPD cohort study. Preliminary data on the analysis of the airways microbiome associated with sputum from individuals who developed lung cancer in a VA funded COPD cohort study will be presented. These informal talks are part of the GEM Work-in-Progress series held at 4:00 p.m. on the 4th Monday of each month. The location rotates among the Downtown Medical, North and South campuses. The speaker schedule is on the GEM website (www.buffalo.edu/gem). If you would like to present at a GEM Work-in-Progress session, let us know (coe-gem@buffalo.edu) and we will get you onto the schedule.
