Sweeping changes to the health industry are fundamentally altering the consumption, delivery and cost of healthcare. The role of technology in resolving massive financial concerns and advancing patient care in a safe and effective manner is undeniable. According to research by MGI and McKinsey's Business Technology Office, if U.S. healthcare were to use big data creatively and effectively to drive efficiency and quality, the sector could create more than $300 billion in value every year. Additionally, the increasing number of healthcare standards and requirements heightens the need to improve integration and interoperability of medical devices and HIT systems in clinical environments. These factors present significant opportunities and challenges in ensuring appropriate communications standards, terminology, data access and interoperability to support the healthcare and biomedical research enterprises. This meeting will explore these issues and address: Linking medical technology to centralized EMR systems: 1) What should component suppliers and the medical device community keep in mind when designing new technologies to operate within HIT systems? 2) Initiatives and guidelines/standards from the NYS Department of Health and the US Department of Health and Human Services for integrating HIT with new medical devices 3) How future computing and informatics tools will interface with large health systems data networks
