The inauguration of Satish K. Tripathi as the 15th president of the University at Buffalo is an occasion for celebrating the rich history of the University at Buffalo and the enduring relationship between the university and the greater Buffalo community. In conjunction with this important moment in UB’s history, the University Libraries present Inaugurations, Anniversaries & Celebrations, an exhibition highlighting UB’s past presidents and chancellors.

The exhibit draws on materials from the collections of the University Archives, highlighting the many inaugural traditions that are part of the university’s long and distinguished history. Historic photographs, illustrations and artifacts from previous UB presidential inaugurations and university celebrations recall and honor the fourteen individuals who preceded President Tripathi.

Text and images in the exhibit cases recall the achievements of each UB chancellor and president, beginning with Millard Fillmore, the university’s first chancellor (1846-1874), and continuing to John B. Simpson, UB president from 2004-2011. Artifacts on display reflect UB history from its earliest years to the present, and include a variety of unique items such as the original stock subscription book, opened in 1846 to secure funds to launch the University of Buffalo. The second signature on the subscription list is that of Millard Fillmore. Class rosters, commencement photographs, graduation booklets and memorabilia from previous UB inaugural and investiture ceremonies recognize and honor the individuals who have shaped the history of UB.
