Young children are living in an ever increasingly digital society and reading digital texts requires application and interpretation of multimodal information (e.g., images, sounds, movement, layout, spoken and written language) in diverse pathways that could differ from reading tradition texts.

Grounded in a transactional view of reading (Rosenblatt, 2004) and partnered with the Heritage Heights Elementary school, this study by Dr. Wang investigates how young children (ages 5-6), engage with multimodal text (e.g., iPad book apps), explore and develop understandings and comprehension with multimodal text in kindergarten classrooms.

Wang's findings will inform ways for teachers to engage emergent readers with multimodal text and potentially increase their literacy success.
