A group of Russian soldiers is ambushed by rebels in the Chechen mountains. Two Russian soldiers, one battle-seasoned and the other barely into his boots and uniform, are taken prisoner by an old man who wants to swap them for his son in Russian detention. The two prisoners cope with the situation in very different ways, as one works to escape while the other tries to make friends with his captors. Political rivals, divided by a bloody war, are forced to come to terms with one another in this drama, which was adapted from Leo Tolstoy's short story "Prisoner of the Caucasus" and received both Oscar and Golden Globe nominations as Best Foreign Language Film of 1997. Tanya Shilina-Conte, Department of Media Study, will introduce the film and lead a discussion following the screening.
