Our main goal for the symposium is to enhance understanding of the causes of the recent flows of people from Africa and the Middle East to Europe. We will explore the historical roots and global dimensions of this contemporary explosion of forced migration and human trafficking in order to uncover the sources of the current crisis and to explore possible solutions. We also hope to describe the conditions that permit the persistence of slavery and related forms of bondage in our times and to learn how we can act to eliminate, or at least alleviate, those conditions.
