Buffalo, NY- The University at Buffalo Department of Theatre & Dance will present Blood Wedding from Wednesday, October 23 to Saturday, October 27, 2013 in the Black Box Theater located at the Center for the Arts. Performance times are Wednesday – Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 2:30pm. Tickets are $20, students and seniors $10. The sixteen-strong cast includes majors from across the Department of Theatre and Dance’s programs. Blood Wedding is rightly considered to be Lorca’s greatest play, first produced in 1933 when the poet was a young man of 35. The plot of the play is deceptively simple, and is based on an actual incident which was reported at the time in one of Granada’s newspapers – the story tells of a bride who eloped with her former lover, and of how the lover was subsequently killed by the groom’s brother. Vincent O’Neill will direct the production. He is an Associate Professor in UB’s Department of Theatre & Dance and Artistic Director of Buffalo's Irish Classical Theatre Company. He is former President of the Theatre Alliance of Buffalo, which represents twenty professional theatre companies in Western New York, and a six-time recipient (2008-2013) of the Artvoice Best of Buffalo Award for acting. Vincent’s connection to Lorca goes back to his teenage years. Having read Lorca’s magnificent poetry in translation, it soon became clear that he was missing out on a whole world of imagery and metaphor and textual richness. Lorca’s profound influence inspired him to join the Spanish Society at University College Dublin, and he spent three years performing Spanish plays in their original language. It was there that Vincent was introduced to Lorca’s extraordinary work. Having been cast in the role of Leonardo in Blood Wedding, he has had a special affection for the play ever since.
