ISSS Workshop
Income Tax Workshop (for nonresident filers)
Learn about U.S. tax laws as they apply to F-1 and J-1 students who had been in the U.S. for five years or less in 2012 and J-1 scholars who had been in the U.S. for two years or less in 2012. Learn tax vocabulary, what tax forms you have to fill out, how to fill out those forms, if you are eligible for a tax treaty benefit, how to claim tax treaty benefits, what to do if Social Security and Medicare were withheld from your paycheck, and where to go for help if you have a question. Find out what you need to do to file an income tax return. We recommend that you bring your W-2 and 1042-S form(s) to the workshop. If you download federal (U.S. Government) tax forms 1040NR-EZ and 8843, and New York State tax forms IT-2 and IT-203 (available at www.buffalo.edu/intlservices/isss_tax.html) and bring them to the workshop, you can prepare your income tax return during the presentation.
