Public benefit programs reach only a portion of their intended target audience. Professor Szczygiel's project explores a grassroots approach to expanding participation, focusing on programs that provide support to seniors who are striving to age in community. The two goals are to develop an effective screening tools for eligibility and then to remove barriers to enrollment through the use of “neighbors”.

Professor Szczygiel was awarded a Civic Engagement Research Fellowship in 2012-13.
