Prior to becoming director of the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center, Paul Haenle served from 2007-2009 as director for China, Taiwan and Mongolia on the National Security Council staffs of Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, and from 2004-2007 as executive assistant to National Security Advisors Condoleezza Rice and Stephen Hadley. Trained as a China foreign area officer in the U.S. Army, Haenle was assigned twice to the U.S. embassy in Beijing and served as a U.S. area commander in the Republic of Korea. Mr. Haenle's presentation will address areas of mistrust, common interests, and the impact of U.S.-China relations on China's role internationally.
