Positioning for Growth

When Taylor Devices Inc. needed to secure International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certification, the Tonawanda manufacturer contacted the Center for Industrial Effectiveness (TCIE), a program of the UB School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Part of the certification process included identifying the requirements for each job process and position, which led to employees being measured against their specific roles.

“We learned that having a regular, formal review process keeps the company informed as to individual performance, and keeps the individual motivated,” says Benjamin Kujawinski, production manager and certified lead auditor at Taylor Devices.

With TCIE acting as the facilitator for certification, the company was better prepared for audits and realized significant savings. They also engaged with the center for Certified Lean Professional Training to identify and eliminate inefficient, unnecessary processes.

Results include decreased production costs, reduced lead time and improved product quality, which equated to happier customers. Kujawinski says the company would not have landed some large contracts without Lean.

“Any time we think we need some improvement in a process area,” Kujawinski says, “we have TCIE on speed dial.”
