Keith Waugaman

Paths to Employment

Two and a half years ago, Keith Waugaman was an out-of work machine operator without a high school diploma.  He used UB’s Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) to jumpstart his new career as a cleaner with UB Facilities.  He earned his general equivalency degree through EOC while also working in the center’s stock room on a variety of maintenance projects from moving furniture to setting up computers and tracking inventory.  These experiences sparked his interest in maintenance careers.

His next step was EOC’s National Work Readiness Credential (NWRC) program – a national online exam administered by the EOC in its headquarters.  Participants take a one-day workshop prior to the exam to learn about soft skills required for entry-level jobs by many employers.  Waugaman says the NWRC exam program taught him how to listen and cooperate with others – key tools in his UB job.  “The NWRC prepares you for the interview process and how to use your education and skills in the workplace,” he says.

Waugaman also took courses in computer repair, finance and a sterilization technician program and recommends the center to anyone looking to start a career, regardless of age or background.  He says, “The staff and workers treat you with great respect.”
