Social Work: Gateway to the community (School of Social Work / Community Relations)

Professional social workers can be found in almost every aspect of our society in Western New York. You find them working in government offices and for elected officials, the district attorney’s office and all levels of the court system. Professional social workers are also in businesses, not-for-profits, nursing homes, hospitals and counseling centers – an essential part of the team in any office that serves people, ages 0 to 100. UB students join the professionals as interns, learning how to work with individuals and groups, providing the equivalent of nearly $1.8 million in volunteer hours annually. By partnering with the community, the students and professional social workers have a huge impact, creating positive change in people’s lives.

Presenter: Zoe Koston, Field Education Coordinator, UB School of Social Work

Success in Leveraging UB Resources (Applied Sciences Group / UB STOR)

UB STOR is uniquely positioned to see new and exciting technologies and to identify resources, engaging local companies to assist in development. Thanks to collaborations with UB, Applied Sciences Group grew 20% in 2011 and expects to exceed that growth in 2012. It’s an upward spiral of success: when they sell more engineering services, they hire more people. Successful ASC/UB ventures include: finding funding for the VA Talker and Eyecan Vision System; collaborating with incubator client Programmable Equipment Company, and development of UB technologies Hickey Cardiac Monitor, ISOVENT and Talker. Learn how your small business can take advantage of UB’s resources.

It is essential in today’s workplace that employees have good computer skills. It is equally important that employers have an effective way to assess the level of the computer proficiency of new hires. This workshop will introduce employers and workforce development professionals to the standard and customized computer training and award-winning industry certification programs available from UB Educational Opportunity Center.

Maximizing Community Returns through Social Entrepreneurship (CEL)

The U Community Health Organization, Inc. and Heart of the City Neighborhoods, Inc. are two examples of organizations actively working to maximize community returns to private and public investments in housing, education, the environment, and community health. This workshop will describe how concepts such as the triple bottom line, social entrepreneurship, and community economics are being put into practice in Buffalo and beyond, and how new laws, such as New York’s new B (Benefit) Corporation legislation, are providing even more opportunities for organizations to reconcile profitability and social and environmental missions. We will also explore the many UB resources and networks that social entrepreneurs can draw from, including UB Law Clinics and the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership.

Using Supercomputing to Aid Animation (Center for Computational Research)

UB's Center for Computational Research (CCR) has partnered with IBC Digital, a local animation company, to develop a system for the rapid turnaround of computer rendered animation projects. IBC Digital has vast experience creating animations for feature films, commercials, and TV shows. By using a system developed by CCR staff, content created by IBC Digital artists can leverage the computing capacity at UB to provide a finished animation in a much shorter time frame than a traditional render farm. Due to the rapid and iterative nature of this system, greater fidelity can be achieved in the finished product. This presentation will describe the process as well as show several animations which resulted from this collaboration.

Presenter: Ben Porcari, Founder, IBC Digital

Partnering with the Life Sciences Industry to Improve Health and the Economy (CoE / UB CAT)

It takes expertise, guidance and means to successfully navigate concepts from lab to market. UB’s New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences (CoE) and UB’s Center for Advanced Biomedical and Bioengineering Technology (UB CAT) connect university resources with the life sciences industry to make it happen. Learn more about the CoE’s entrepreneurial environment and how success means both innovation and more jobs for the Buffalo Niagara region. Hear from industry representatives who have successfully navigated product development and funding with critical help from the CoE and the UB CAT, and find out what it can mean for you and your company.

Presenter: Marnie LaVigne, PhD, UB Associate Vice President for Economic Development

Creating a Vision for Information Infrastructure and New Product Development (NYSCEDII / UB TCIE)

UB TCIE and the NYS Center for Engineering Design and Industrial Innovation (NYSCEDII) are collaborating on the development of a course on e-Enabled New Product Development. The critical perspective for this course is that firms not only create new products through systematic processes, but also produce new knowledge that should be captured and re-used effectively in the short and long term. This seminar will provide a mini-lecture drawn from content in the overall course, as well as a Q&A session to encourage discussion among potential collaborators.

Presenter: Andrew Olewnik, Research Associate, NYS Center for Engineering Design and Industrial Innovation (NYSCEDII)

Communities are more connected than they think and people often more digitally literate than they realize. This workshop will introduce community members to the variety of programs offered by the UB Educational Opportunity Center. EOC has programs for everyone -- from the person who is computer-shy to someone who is ready to tackle industry certifications for employment in the Information Technology industry.
