Keynote Address: The Value of Diversity and Global Thinking

Teresa Miller, UB Vice Provost for Equity and Inclusion and Law Professor

Miller is UB’s first vice provost for equity and inclusion. Previously, she enjoyed a distinguished career as a professor of law, specializing in immigration law, criminal procedure and prisoner law. Miller’s long-standing commitment to equity and social justice has been demonstrated by her leadership as a member of the Board of Directors of the Correctional Association of New York, an advisor to the Lifers’ Group at Attica Correctional Facility, and her engagement with the issue of mass incarceration as a documentary filmmaker. She earned her JD from Harvard Law School in 1986.

Jose A. Aviles

Aviles, associate vice provost and director of admissions at UB, is dedicated to serving students inspired by his own journey as a first-generation college student. He has served at seven various higher-education institutions, increasing the number of underrepresented students and enrolling the most academically accomplished freshman class at each one.

Daniel K. Barrow

Associate director of recruitment in UB’s Office of Admissions, Barrow executed new programs that have attracted a historic applicant pool to the university. At the University of Delaware, he increased enrollment of students by more than 40 percent.

John M. Canty Jr., MD ’79

Canty is a SUNY Distinguished Professor and the Albert and Elizabeth Rekate Professor of Medicine at UB. He is director of UB's Center for Research in Cardiovascular Medicine, chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, and head of the Cardiovascular Disease Group in UB’s New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences. 

John L. Crassidis, BS '89, MS '91, PhD '93

Crassidis is the Calspan-University at Buffalo Research Center (CUBRC) Professor in Space Situational Awareness in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He is director of UB/CUBRC’s Center for Multisource Information Fusion, and director of UB’s Nanosatellite Laboratory, which is building three satellites for the Air Force and NASA.

Stephen C. Dunnett, PhD ’77, BA ’68

Dunnett is vice provost for international education and professor of foreign language education. He is the founder and director of UB’s English Language Institute. Dunnett oversees international programs and activities at UB.

Megan N. Eubank

An Honors College student majoring in biological sciences, Eubank has studied abroad three times while at UB. She volunteers as a global ambassador for the Office of Study Abroad Programs, and plans to attend medical school after graduating from UB this year.

Liesl Folks

Folks is dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and professor of electrical engineering. She spent 16 years in research and development in the magnetic data storage industry before coming to UB in 2012.

Emily J. Grijalva

Grijalva, assistant professor in the Department of Organization and Human Resources, is a researcher with UB's Center for Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness. Her research interests include narcissism, leadership, gender and counterproductive work behavior. 

Graham L. Hammill

Hammill was appointed UB’s vice provost for graduate education and dean of the graduate school in 2015. Former chair of the UB English department, Hammill’s research centers on early modern British literature, political thought, and the history of sexuality.  He spent 13 years as an English professor at the University of Notre Dame. 

Jeremy M. Jacobs, ’60

Chairman of Delaware North Companies, a global leader in hospitality and food service, and one of the largest privately held companies in North America, Jacobs has served as chairman of the UB Council since 1998 and is owner of the National Hockey League’s Boston Bruins.

G. James Lemoine

Lemoine, assistant professor in the Department of Organization and Human Resources, is a researcher with UB's Center for Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness. His research interests include leadership behaviors, motivation and organizational citizenship, creativity and gender, and non-hierarchical leadership.

Lee H. Melvin

Melvin has been vice provost for enrollment management at UB since 2013, overseeing undergraduate and graduate admissions, financial aid, student accounts and registration, as well as several other offices and programs. Prior to arriving at UB, he served as associate vice provost for enrollment at Cornell University. 

Cristanne C. Miller

Miller is SUNY Distinguished Professor and Edward H. Butler Professor of Literature in the English Department. She has published extensively on 19th- and 20th-century poetry, particularly but not exclusively American poetry.

Kristen M. Murphy, BA ’96

Murphy is senior director in UB’s Office of Alumni Engagement. She serves as treasurer on the Council of Alumni Membership and Marketing Professionals board of directors.

Lisa Napora, PhD ’13

An educator, researcher, systems thinker and consultant in the areas of contemplative education and contemplative leadership, Napora is a visiting scholar in UB’s Graduate School of Education.

Nancy E. Paton

Paton is vice president for university communications, overseeing UB's overarching communications strategy in support of institutional goals. As the chief public relations and marketing officer, she is responsible for enhancing UB’s institutional image and managing its reputation as a leader among the nation’s premier higher education institutions.

Trevor Poag

Director of global learning opportunities, Poag develops study abroad programs in support of curricular need at UB. Prior to UB, he designed and implemented global learning experiences in Latin America.

Chitra Rajan

Rajan has been associate vice president for research advancement at UB since August 2015. Previously, she was associate vice president for research at Iowa State University and assistant dean at the Albany Medical Center in New York.

Robin G. Schulze

Dean of the UB College of Arts and Sciences, Schulze previously served as interim associate dean at the University of Delaware and head of Penn State’s English department.

Cynthia M. Shore, MBA ’82, BS ’81

Shore is senior assistant dean for alumni engagement and external relations for the UB School of Management, and executive director of the school’s alumni association.

Jin Young Song

Song is an assistant professor in the School of Architecture and Planning and the founding principal of dio Inno Architecture PLLC. He is conducting building façade research supported by SMART (Sustainable Manufacturing and Advanced Robotic Technologies), part of UB’s Communities of Excellence.

Kuo Siong (Gordon) Tan

Tan’s research focus is on human capital requirements of the finance and accounting industries, and the connectivity of urban financial networks. He is pursuing a PhD in geography at UB. 

Satish K. Tripathi

UB’s 15th president is internationally recognized as an accomplished researcher and transformative higher education leader. He is a member the board of directors of the Association of American Universities (AAU) and the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU).

Thomas R. Ulbrich, EMBA ’06

Ulbrich is executive director of UB’s Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership. He also is executive director of UB’s Blackstone LaunchPad, an experiential learning program to help students develop entrepreneurial skills.

A. Scott Weber

UB’s vice president for student life, Weber oversees efforts to provide nearly 30,000 students with the resources they need to thrive at the university and beyond.  Weber is a professor of civil, structural and environmental engineering in the UB School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.   

Kristin J. Woods

Kristin Woods became assistant vice president for the UB Office of Alumni Engagement in 2016. Before that, she was assistant vice president for alumni and career services at the University of Richmond in Virginia, where she led the realignment of their career development center with its alumni relations office.
