After earning a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in library science from UB, Kelly pursued her childhood dream to work in business and used her librarian skills to earn a master's degree in business administration from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Twenty-nine years later, in 2011, she helped four students from the UB School of Management achieve a dream of their own: to start a student-run investment group, today known as the Terese Kelly Investment Group. In addition to working as a librarian for the Rochester Public Library, she continues to mentor students in the investment group and attends its advisory board meetings.
