Holger Schunemann, PhD ’00, MS ’97
Schunemann is chair of Health Research Methods, Evidence and Impact at McMaster University – the birthplace of evidence-based medicine and problem-based learning -- in Hamilton, Ontario.
He also is a research professor in the UB Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health. He received an MD degree in 1993 from the Medical School of Hannover, Germany. He went on to earn a doctoral degree at UB, conducting population-based studies on the association between oxidative stress, micronutrients and respiratory health.
His scientific work now focuses on evidence synthesis, quality-of-life research and the development of health-care recommendations spanning clinical medicine to public health. Author or co-author of more than 500 peer-reviewed publications, Schunemann was named one of the 3,000 most influential scientific minds by Thomson Reuters in 2015 and 2016.
