Before You Go — A Checklist For International Travel

Travelers should review the U.S. Department of State’s list of important steps to take to prepare for a safe trip outside the United States.

Be Aware Of Travel Alerts And Warnings

Research Foundation-funded travel to countries on the State Department’s warning list requires the provost’s approval prior to travel.

Be Prepared For Emergencies

Make sure you have the contact information for the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate office at your destination. 

Keep other important phone numbers in your mobile phone directory, as applicable:

Make Photocopies Of Your Itinerary And Travel Documents

Make two photocopies of all your travel documents in case of emergency or if your documents are lost or stolen.  Leave one copy with a friend or relative at home.  Carry the other copy with you, stored separately from the originals. Documents to make copies of include:

  • Passport ID page
  • Foreign visa (if applicable)
  • Itinerary
  • Hotel confirmation
  • Airline ticket
  • Driver’s license
  • Credit cards brought on the trip
