Tips for Successful Passport Application and Renewal

  • Typically, applicants can receive their passports more quickly when applying between the months of September to December. Renewing an adult’s passport may be done by mail if the applicant meets certain criteria.
  • The Department of State will only accept checks or money orders; cash and credit cards are not accepted as a form of payment.
  • Children and adults applying for the first time must appear in person at a passport acceptance facility, which include designated U.S. post offices, clerks of court and public libraries.
  • Parents of children under 16 must also submit ID for themselves, provide the child’s birth certificate and sign the application in the presence of the agent. Learn more about passports for children under 16 years of age.
  • UB’s Law Library is a designated passport acceptance facility. In addition to information on UB's Law Library website, you can reach them at 716-645-2204  with specific questions. The law library will also take passport photos at a cost of $10 each.

Keep in mind that many countries require your passport to be valid for 6 months past trip completion.  Learn about country-specific information, travel alerts and warnings for your destination.
