Interpreting Services

Accessibility Resources (AR) coordinates interpreting services to help provide equal access to education for deaf students. Services include sign language interpreters and Communication Access Real-Time Translation (CART), a transcription service.

Interpreting Services for Students

Students should submit interpreter/CART requests for their courses to AR at least six weeks before the semester begins to help ensure availability. Please include the department code and number (i.e., UGC 111), meeting time and duration, and the building and room location for each course where services are required.

Requests for one-time events like instructor office hours, required meetings or group work, should be made one week in advance whenever possible. AR may not be able to fill requests made with less than one week's notice.

AR should also be informed as soon as possible of any absences or schedule changes that would affect the need for services. Due to a shortage of interpreters in the Buffalo area, interpreters can often be rescheduled for other Deaf community members if they are not needed by a student who is absent due to short-term illness or other unforeseen events. Please contact AR immediately if you will be absent from class.

Interpreting Services in the Classroom

If you are a professor or instructor with questions about interpreting services in the classroom, please review these tips on Etiquette When Using A Sign Language Interpreter: PDF (143KB) | Word (38KB).

If you have any other questions or concerns please contact AR. Please see our information on how to arrange a media accessibility consultation to learn more about captioning and transcription.

Interpreting Services for Faculty or Staff

Faculty or Staff at UB who require interpreting services should submit requests to their employing department. Departments in need of interpreting services for their employees or events may contact AR for consultation on the process. However, each department is responsible for its own interpreting services scheduling and expenses.

Interpreting Services at Special Events

AR does not coordinate interpreting services or assistive listening devices for special events on campus. If you are in need of these accommodations for special events please contact the UB venue hosting the event for more information. Please see the links below for more information on accommodations for UB graduation or performing arts events.
