Michael E. Cain, previously director of the Cardiovascular Division and Tobias and Hortense Lewin Professor of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, has been named dean of the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at UB.
Cain is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Council on Clinical Cardiology of the American Heart Association and the Heart Rhythm Society. Chair of the board of directors of the Sarnoff Endowment for Cardiovascular Science, he has held numerous invited professorships and lectureships across the U.S. and abroad. His research has been funded consistently by the National Institutes of Health since 1984. Coauthor with B. E. Sobel and P. R. Eisenberg of Medical Management of Heart Disease (Marcel Dekker, Inc., 1996), Cain has authored or coauthored more than 80 peer-reviewed manuscripts and more than 50 invited publications.
Kathryn R. Costello, who has more than 30 years of experience in development, strategic planning and management as a university senior executive and international consultant, has been appointed vice president for development. Since 2002, she has served as partner of Alexander Haas Martin & Partners in Atlanta, where she provided clients a wide range of services, including strategic planning, board and leadership development and philanthropy.
Costello has held senior leadership positions at the University of Georgia, Rice University, University of Maryland, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Southern Methodist University and Vanderbilt University. Her professional accomplishments have included planning and implementing capital campaigns totaling more than $1 billion.
