And they’re off … about 20 UB alumni, family and friends gathered at Saratoga Springs Racetrack July 28 for an afternoon of great com-pany and stimulating conversation under the Paddock Tent. UB alumni, including Dawn M. Baumgarden, BA ’03; and Warren E. Hamilton, MS ’91, BA ’89 & BA ’87, were on hand to try their luck.
Say “so long” to summer and “hello” to UB. Alumni and incoming UB students and families from the Albany area gathered at the Crossings of Colonie for the annual Student Summer Send-off BBQ picnic on August 18. Barbara J. Rooney, EdM ’92 & BS ’78, associate director of admissions at UB, along with Jessica K. Murphy, BA ’06 & BS ’06, were on hand to give the guests the inside scoop on achieving success at UB.

On June 4, more than 30 alumni and friends gathered for a day at Camden Yards to watch the Baltimore Orioles play the New York Yan-kees. Alumni met before the game at the Capital City Brewing Company for food and drinks. Atlanta chapter leader Scott St. Joseph, BS ’96, in town visiting relatives, attended the event with his family. Also joining in the fun were Keith Zurbuch, BS ’98; Jennifer Wiejaczka, MSW ’00; and chapter leader Jeremy LePosa, BA ’03.
On July 19, the Boston chapter held a networking event at Coogan’s Irish pub in the heart of Beantown. The group also talked about future events and a new leader was introduced. Arlone Cofield, BS ’72, Boston chapter leader for nearly five years, turned over the reins to Kristin Hunger, BA ’03. Kristin will be assisted by fellow alumni Melissa Kleinman, BA ’04; Gabriella Spear, BS ’97; and Scott Roth, BS ’97.
The Cleveland chapter hosted an event at Shooters, located in the Cleveland Flats, with guest speaker and UB alumna Jeannie Zimmer, BA ’01. Jeannie is the creator of Artefakt Magazine, which covers local and regional art, dance and music events throughout Western New York and other Great Lakes regions. Mary Sue French, BS ’80; Mark D. Katz, BA ’71; and Thomas Huchko, BS ’70, also attended.
Take me out to the ball game … Jeffrey Gray, PhD ’04, JD ’03 & MBA ’96, and his wife, Judy, MBA ’96; joined James R. Winkler, PhD ’94, DDS ’80 & BA ’74; and Wilfred Moss, BA ’94, at the annual UB Alumni Family Night on May 31. About 20 alumni and friends gathered at the Hockeytown Café for a pregame networking event hosted by Detroit chapter leader Brad Perry, BS ’89, then watched the Detroit Tigers battle the New York Yankees in Comerica Park.
Nearly 40 alumni and friends joined the UB Alumni Association and the Employee Alumni chapter for Alumni Night at Dunn Tire Park in downtown Buffalo on June 7. The Houston chapter hosted a Sunday brunch at the Berryhill Baja Grill in Hawthorne Square on June 11. About 15 people attended the networking event, including Barry J. Kaplan, PhD ’75, MA ’73 & BA ’71, and his wife, Brenda; as well as Rachel Anderson, BA ’79; and Andrew M. Sarantapoulas, MS ’02 & BS ’98.
The New York City chapter hosted its first Student Summer Send-off BBQ picnic August 4 at Eisenhower Park on Long Island. Alumni, includ-ing the Hon. George Heymann, BA ’71; and Michael T. Sciortino, BA ’03, joined admissions advisor Sara Meskill, EdM ’05 & BA ’03, in wel-coming approximately 50 students and their families to the UB community. Students mingled with alumni and fellow incoming students from the New York City metropolitan area. Note that Heymann is among those featured in our story on former Student Association presidents.

The UB Bulls kicked off their 2006 football season with a 9-3 win over Temple University on August 31. Approximately 20 alumni and friends, including Eric Almonte, JD ’99 & BA ’96, his wife Michele, MS ’98 & BA ’96; and Yue-Qian Zhen, PhD ’91, met up to watch the game on TV and network in Chickie’s and Pete’s Café. John A. Modrzynski, BA ’82, former UB football team member, provided analysis of the game and the coaching style of new head coach Turner Gill.
Nearly 30 alumni, students and friends of UB came to beautiful Webster Park on the shores of Lake Ontario on a picture-perfect day for the annual Student Summer Send-off BBQ picnic August 13. Students and parents connected and received words of wisdom from several UB alumni, including Frances E. McCloskey, BA ’04; and Anthony J. Mendicino, DDS ’88.
Seattle, WA (From left): Karthik S. Kathiresan, a junior computer engineering major who was in Seattle for a summer internship with Microsoft, joins Brian Anger, MS ’04 & BS ’03, and Anger's fiancée, Jill Edinger, BA ’04. They were among the sellout crowd who attended the Seattle-Toronto baseball game in July in Seattle’s Safeco Field.
A sellout crowd of 44 attended the fourth annual pregame gathering in the parking lot of the Pyramid Alehouse, Brewery & Restaurant be-fore the Seattle Mariners American League contest against the Toronto Blue Jays on July 25. Among those in attendance were former Uni-versity Student Alumni Board president Jill Edinger, BA ’04, and her fiancé, Brian Anger, MS ’04 & BS ’03. Jill and Brian were married three weeks later.
More than 20 alumni, students and parents joined the UB Alumni Association for the annual Student Summer Send-off BBQ picnic at Onon-daga Lake Park on August 10. Students and parents spent the evening getting to know each other, making friends and learning about the university. Alumni, including Paul and Holly Avery, who both received their law degrees from UB in 2005, were in attendance to share their insights with the new students.
More than 100 alumni, families and friends registered for the annual UB Alumni Association embassy reception, which took place this year at the Embassy of the Commonwealth of Australia on July 11. Bob Stevenson, associate professor in the UB Graduate School of Education and a native Australian, spoke on the history, culture and government of the continent and country. He also offered insights into the ex-change programs UB maintains with Australian universities. Attendees dined on hors d’oeuvres and Australian wines.
