2000s Classnotes

Peter L. McCown, Ph.D. 2000 & Ed.M. 1996, has been appointed vice president for institutional advancement at Bethel College. He formerly served as vice president for advancement and assistant business professor at Roberts Wesleyan College. McCown is a member of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and in 2001 was the recipient of a CASE Circle of Excellence Award. He lives in Spencerport, NY.

Elizabeth Richards, M.A. 2000, is a teaching artist in film/cinema and digital arts at Point Park College in Pittsburgh, PA, where she resides.

Eric Jefferson, B.S. 2001, has joined the Buffalo, NY firm of Freed, Maxick & Battaglia as a staff accountant. He lives in Tonawanda, NY.

David Reinhart, B.S. 2001, has been named senior accountant at the Williamsville, NY-based accounting firm of Tronconi, Segarra & Hore. He lives in North Tonawanda, NY.

Debra Silkes, M.B.A. 2001, a surgeon at Millard Fillmore Suburban and Kenmore Mercy hospitals, has joined the medical staff of United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, NY, as a general surgeon. She is a board-certified general surgeon licensed to practice in New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida and Maine. Silkes is a member of the New York Medical Society, the National Association of Women Physicians and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. She resides in Tonawanda, NY.

Richard Wagner, M.B.A. 2001 & B.S. 1981, has been promoted to chief financial officer at John W. Danforth Co. Before joining the company in 2003, Wagner held the position of division controller for Howden Buffalo. He resides in North Tonawanda, NY.

Darley M. Willis, Ed.M. 2001 & B.A. 1990, is director of human resources for all three campuses of Erie Community College, a position she has held for the past 13 years. She is a former assistant vice president and manager of human resources at Marine Midland Bank (now HSBC). In October, 2004 she was one of 25 Western New Yorkers to be honored at the 32nd Annual Black Achievers in Industry Awards. Willis lives in Amherst, NY.

Brendan Brady, M.B.A. 2002 & B.S. 2002, has been named senior accountant on the general services team for Dopkins & Company, a certified public accounting firm. He has been with the firm since 2002 and specializes in manufacturing and not-for-profit clients. Brady resides in Kenmore, NY.

Steven Longo, M.B.A. 2002, has been named chief operating officer at Benchmark Group. In this newly created position, he will coordinate and oversee strategic planning. He lives in Amherst, NY.

Caley Milliken, B.A. 2002, a graduate acting student at Purdue University, costarred in the modern comedy As Bees in Honey Down, which ran until October 2004. She has studied ballet for 21 years and resides in Elmira, NY.

Thomas E. Popek, J.D. 2002, has joined the intellectual property and technology practice group at Hodgson Russ’s Buffalo, NY office. He concentrates his practice in counseling clients on protecting their intellectual property interest in patents, copyrights and trademarks. Before joining the firm, Popek served as a consulting engineer to Fortune 500 companies, helping them to develop new technologies in the imaging, communications, semiconductor and software industries. He resides in Buffalo.

*Michael Cropp, M.B.A. 2003, has been named president and chief executive officer of Independent Health in Amherst, NY. He is a board-certified family physician and has been with Independent Health since 1996, having served most recently as executive vice president and chief medical officer. Cropp lives in Amherst.

Tamara DiVasto, J.D. 2003, has joined the business law group at Downs, Rachlin, Martin. She assumed the position in September 2004. DiVasto is a former judicial law clerk for Justice John A. Dooley of the Vermont Supreme Court and lives in Burlington, VT.

Yin Li, M.S. 2003, has been named database programmer/analyst at Hilbert College in Hamburg, NY. She is a former database administrator at Visteon Climate Control Systems and lives in North Tonawanda, NY.

Nicole Sommer, B.F.A. 2003, has been appointed graphic designer for Prometheus Books. In this position, she will work in the design and production of book jackets, catalog covers and other materials. Sommer lives in Grand Island, NY.

*Michael Wesolowski, B.A. 2003, is continuing his research on Internet usage patterns in various neighborhoods, focusing on wireless Internet connections. He lives in Buffalo, NY.

Margaret Austin, B.A. 2004, has been named vice president of nursing at Westerly Hospital in Westerly, RI. In this position, she will be responsible for all medical and surgical nursing services, the Women’s Health Center, cardiac catheterization lab, intensive care unit, the emergency department and operating rooms. Austin lives in North Stonington, CT.

*Marc Bayer, M.L.S. 2004 & M.A. 2004, has been appointed marketing coordinator for Elrae Industries, a producer of stamped- and roll-formed components, custom assemblies and retail-ready products, located in Alden, NY. He has extensive experience in Web, video and print technologies and has worked previously with print and design firms in Buffalo, NY and New York City. Bayer resides in Buffalo.

*Claudia Casciani, B.A. 2004, has joined the University of Rochester as an admissions counselor. She lives in Rochester, NY.

*Nicholas DiCesare, J.D. 2004, has joined the Buffalo, NY firm of Hiscock & Barclay as an associate. He will concentrate his practice on commercial litigation matters, as well as torts, insurance and product liability issues. DiCesare lives in Depew, NY.

*Matthew Erickson, B.F.A. 2004, a graduate acting student at Purdue University, costarred in the modern comedy As Bees in Honey Down, which ran until October 2004. Erickson studied Shakespeare and contemporary British theatre at Middlesex University in London as an undergraduate and serves as an international delegate and liaison in artistic and cultural exchange. He has performed, choreographed and directed in England, France, Greece and Canada, as well as in the United States. Erickson lives in Depew, NY.

*Kristin Sims, B.S. 2004, has been appointed internal auditor at Delaware North Companies’ corporate headquarters in Buffalo, NY. She was previously a staff internal auditor for Merchants Mutual Insurance Company. Sims lives in Orchard Park, NY.

*Jared Sternberg, B.A. 2004, has joined Disney Publishing Worldwide as a senior marketing coordinator. In this position, he will oversee more than 80 different titles, both foreign and domestic, for Disney Publishing’s book division. He is a former consultant and traffic coordinator of world marketing operations at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. Sternberg lives in Rego Park, NY.

*Samantha Zappia, J.D. 2004, has joined Hiscock & Barclay as an associate. She will focus her practice in the areas of commercial litigation, torts, insurance and product liability. She lives in Liverpool, NY.
