The newly formed UB Employee chapter launched its first campus beautification program on Saturday, October 9, in Coventry Circle on UB’s North Campus. The chapter’s work included planting, pruning and cleaning the green area and gardens at the Center for the Arts and Alumni Arena. Ann Kutner, M.L.S. ’99, and Barbara Mierzwa, B.A. ’67, of the chapter’s program committee were critical to the success of this effort, while Kristin E.M. Riemer, M.A. ’01 (event committee chair) and Donna Malecki, Ed.M. ’03 (communication committee chair), worked hard to inform the more than 2,000 alumni employees about this and other campus events and programs. Chapter president Jay Friedman, Ed.M. ’00 & B.A. ’86, has been helping this active chapter shape its goals during its inaugural year.
Charlotte & Raleigh-Durham, NC
When the Buffalo Bisons traveled to North Carolina July 8, both the Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham chapters went out to the ballpark. Under the leadership of Kathleen Kaney, M.B.A. ’96 & B.A. ’94, the Charlotte chapter hosted a barbecue at the park before the game. The attendees waited through an on-again/off-again, two-and-a-half hour rain delay to catch the Bisons in a doubleheader battle they split with the Durham Bulls.
On Wednesday, August 25, the skies cleared and the rain stopped just long enough for the Chicago chapter to gather outdoors at the newly opened Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park for a reception and concert by Paquito D’Rivera along with the Grant Park Orchestra. Following the concert, several alumni gathered at the Alumni Club to catch the ongoing events of the 2004 Summer Olympics on TV.
Some 24 alumni, spouses and friends attended the third annual networking event at Rustler’s Rooste in Chandler on August 7. The group included Eileen Oviedo, M.B.A. ’83 & M.S. ’80; her husband Enrique, Ph.D. ’84 & M.S. ’77; and Mona and Miguel Juarez, M.L.S. ’98. Both couples ventured from Tucson to attend the event. Chapter cochair Ed Ryczek, B.S. ’71, noted that future plans include a softball game followed by a reception, when UB plays in the Arizona State tournament this spring.

The 25 alumni and friends in attendance then took in the San Diego Padres–Arizona Diamondbacks game. Martha and guest Judy Case-DiPasquale, M.A. ’88, executive director of the YWCA in San Diego, are cochairs of the chapter. Martha is chief executive officer of Geomorph Information Systems.
UB President John B. Simpson attended the 26th annual Buffalo Night in Washington on September 22 in the Dirksen Senate Office Building. The event, hosted by the New York State Society, annually honors an individual with Buffalo roots. This year, the society feted outgoing Congressman and UB alumnus Jack Quinn, Ed.M. ’78, formerly of New York’s 27th district. Also attending was Robert O. Davies, UB associate vice president for alumni relations. Jim Militello, B.A. ’79, president of the Washington chapter, manned a UB information table.
