Jonas Zdanys, Ph.D. '75, chief academic officer and associate commissioner for academic affairs for the Connecticut Department of Higher Education, has received Lithuania's Jotvingiai Prize for 2002, similar to the Pulitzer Prize for poetry given in the U.S. The Jotvingiai Prize, awarded by a select committee of poets and other writers, is the major award for poetry in Lithuania.

Zdanys was honored for his new collection of poetry, written in Lithuanian, entitled Stulpai (Pillars of Smoke). The collection, publishedin May 2002 by the Writers Union Publishing House, was judged the best volume of poetry published in Lithuania that year. Zdanys's awards and honors include the Lithuanian Writers Union Prize for Translation in 1996, the Society Prize for Best Book of the Year in 1994 and the Weinstein Memorial Creative Writing Award. He resides in North Haven, CT.
