1950s Classnotes

Milton E. Schaefer, D.D.S. 1952, received the 2000 Dental Alumni Humanitarian Award at the 23rd Annual Greater Niagara Frontier Dental Meeting sponsored by the UB Dental Alumni Association. Schaefer currently volunteers at Boswell Memorial Hospital in Sun City, AZ. He and his wife, Patricia, reside in Peoria, AZ.

Edward A. Heintz, B.A. 1953, has been elected a Fellow of the American Carbon Society. He was recognized for his work concerning the production and characterization of high-quality petroleum needle cokes using hot-stage cinemicroscopy techniques. He is the retired research manager of Airco Carbon in Niagara Falls, NY, and lives in Williamsville, NY.

Gordon R. Gross, J.D. 1955, was cochair of the 48th Annual Citation Benefit, Western New York Region of the National Conference for Community and Justice. Senior partner in the Buffalo, NY, law firm of Gross, Shuman, Brizdle & Gilfillan, Gross is chair and president of Kleinhans Music Hall Management and a director of Roswell Park Cancer Institute. He is also a board member of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Society, the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies, the Jewish Center of Greater Buffalo, the Weinberg Campus and the Foundation for Deaf Education.

Elizabeth Dribben, B.A. 1958, has been inducted into the Western New York Broadcasting Hall of Fame. A female pioneer in Buffalo broadcasting, she was the first woman to anchor a television news broadcast in Buffalo and is best remembered in Western New York as cohost of the local television morning show, Dialing for Dollars. After years as a radio producer in New York, NY, Dribben continues to do radio commentary for WNYC-FM and is an occasional talk show host at WEVD-AM in New York. In addition, she teaches broadcast journalism at Columbia University.

Eugene D. Mahaney, B.S. 1959, partner at Lumsden & McCormick LLP, will serve as chair of the government auditing and accounting committee of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA). Mahaney has served on this committee since 1990 and has more than 30 years' experience providing consulting, accounting and auditing services to all levels of government. He regularly lectures and conducts seminars for various NYSSCPA committees. He resides in Amherst, NY, with his wife, Nancy S. Mahaney, M.S.W. 1982 & Ed.B. 1962.
