Elizabeth Pierce Olmsted Ross, M.D. 1939, the first female ophthalmologist in Western New York, has been given the 2001 Athena Award, administered by the nonprofit Athena Foundation, in recognition of significant contributions to the region. She has assisted people with visual problems and impairments all her life. In 1999, she donated $1 million to the Blind Association of Western New York capital campaign. The association has been renamed the Elizabeth Pierce Olmsted Center for the Visually Impaired in her honor. She resides in Buffalo, NY.
