Dave Delaney, B.A. '77

Dave Delaney, B.A. 1977, is director of public relations for all 28 offices of Social Security in New Jersey. He also finds time to host and produce two Atlantic City-based television programs: Open Line is a political talk show; Inlets has a magazine format and is broadcast statewide on the Cable Television Network of New Jersey.

Delaney and his wife, Donna, also host Shore Talk, a call-in program for WOND-AM in Atlantic City, broadcast each Saturday to southern New Jersey and Delaware. "We cover a variety of issues with an emphasis on relationship roles and disagreements," Delaney explains. "We are affectionately known as 'The Dueling Delaneys.'"

What Delaney terms "the strange story" of his broadcasting career began during his undergraduate years at UB, when, as campus coordinator for the Sen. Birch Bayh presidential campaign, he got involved with radio in order to date a woman who was working for WBFO. After graduating in history and education, he began to fill in for local radio personalities while working for Social Security in its Niagara Falls office, successfully transferring his broadcasting talents to New Jersey in 1986.

Delaney says UB's range of academic options prepared him for his second career. "On the radio show I go from scientific topics to politics to comedy to theater. At UB, I didn't stick microscopically to history; I hit everything in between. At the time you wonder how it will pay off. I now have so much appreciation for what UB did for me."
