Facts about the bronze buffalo

8 feet long
65 inches high
33 inches at widest point
1,000 lbs.

The new UB buffalo was cast in bronze from a mold made from the fiberglass model of the original Central Terminal buffalo by Messmore & Damon Inc. of New York City. G. H. Messmore, the firm's founder, sculpted the original buffalo in the 1930s, using a clay and papier-mâché process. "My father sculpted the buffalo for the New York Central Railroad, to be used in its Buffalo terminal," explained Col. Francis B. Messmore, son of the company founder and creator of UB's bronze buffalo. The original buffalo crumbled years ago, because of its papier-mâché fragility, as affected by moisture, he said.
