The Bulls in UB sports
From its earliest days, the university named its sports teams after the bison. In the 1930s, however, the name was changed to the "Bulls" as a way to distinguish UB teams from the city's professional sports organizations. In the 1970s, when club sports for women gave way to a varsity structure,
discussion turned to a suitable name for the women's teams at the university.
Although posting "Lady" in front of a team name was the norm for
colleges and universities of that era, "Lady Bulls" was rejected for
its oxymoronic qualities. The "Royals" was chosen in-
stead and continues today as the name for women's
teams in basketball, volleyball, swimming,
cross-country, track and field,
and tennis.
