He 'jumped for joy' at sight of snow
Going to school in a blizzard is the most enduring memory of UB for Fang Sher Chyet, B.S. '89.
"I came from a tropical country and had never seen snow before," says Fang, now based in Singapore as supply line engineering manager with Lucent Technologies Power Systems, a spin-off of AT&T. "In fact, the lowest temperature I had ever experienced before arriving in Buffalo was 75° F. I still remember the first time I saw snow at night from my LaSalle Ave. apartment. I jumped for joy when I saw snowflakes coming down from the sky and melting on the road."
Today, Fang travels throughout Asia for Lucent Technologies, logging more than 114,000 flying miles in the first half of 1996. He previously worked for AT&T in Hong Kong and Shanghai, and as an application engineer for Smith Corona in Singapore.
Born in Malaysia of Chinese parents, Fang credits his UB education for his success in the business world. "The excellent, western-style education I received at UB helped me fit perfectly into the positions with both Smith Corona and AT&T. "What I got from UB was far more than a degree, however. Rather, it was the ambitiousness, diligence, integrity and honesty learned there that has ensured my career success."
